Wollongong’s Scott Law (Avanti Racing) has claimed the opening stage of the?2014 Tour of Gippsland, the seventh event in the?Subaru National Road Series. Law took out the 91 kilometre road race in Warragul ahead of teammate and home-town-hero Brenton Jones, while Queensland?s Jacob Restall (Charter Mason) held on for third place after being part of a late breakaway. Law?s victory puts him into the Tour?s yellow leaders jersey by one second to Jones, who picked up bonus seconds during the race?s intermediate sprint and king of the mountain. 166 riders began the Tour, with multiple crashes shaking up the bunch. An aggressive race saw no breakaways gain more than 30 seconds on the peloton, with the most dangerous move going clear inside the final 15 kilometres. With most teams represented, the chase was left late with only Law and Jones able to get over the top of Restall and his breakaway compainions in time for the finish. The Tour continues on Thursday, September 4?with a 115km road race from Leongatha to Yinnar. The Tour features Gippsland locals Subaru NRS leader Brenton Jones (Avanti Racing), brother Jarryd Jones (African Wildlife Safaris), Kane Walker (Satalyst Giant), Cyrus Monk (Lakes Oil) and?Stuart Smith (health.com.au/search2retain).
