Robbie McEwen signs up for UCI Gran Fondo Series in Perth

PRESS RELEASE ? MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT

GLOBAL CYCLING SUPERSTAR Robbie McEwen, signs on as Event Ambassador for the upcoming UCI Gran Fondo World Series being held in Perth this year. McEwen, participated in the Tour de France 12 times, in 1997 (117th), 1998 (89th), 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010. He has had 12 stage wins. In 1999 on stage 20 he won the sprint in Paris on the Champs-Elys?es.

In welcoming Robbie to the races, CIC Events would like to unveil two key initiatives the former professional road bicycle racer will be championing in his role as Event Ambassador: the Robbie McEwen VIP Riders? BBQ and JOIN the RIDE with Robbie.

?Being the ambassador to the Gran Fondo World Series [March] and UCI World Championship [September] is an honour & great thrill. Staging a World Championship in stunning Perth will certainly be a highlight for everyone involved in cycling. Tourism WA have been a long-time partner of this event and to see a record number of entries only supports the initiative taken 2 years ago by CIC Events. I can?t wait to hit the road in the Gran Fondo, rolling out from Elizabeth Quay and up into the hills. It will be a tough challenge on a world class course!?

Commencing in the heart of the Perth CBD, the event will showcase internationally the landmark Elizabeth Quay development ? further enhancing Perth?s reputation as one of the most liveable cities in the world. The course for the qualifying rounds has been designed to explore Perth?s newly revitalised riverfront precinct, providing riders with the only opportunity to familiarise themselves with the track ahead of the Finals in September.

In addition to Robbie McEwen, the competition has also attracted acclaimed former Australian Olympic riders and Patrick Jonker. After representing his country in road cycling at the Seoul Olympics in 1988, Fairless retired from the sport shortly after, only to then make a victorious comeback and claim the UCI World Championship title in 2015. As he gears up to defend his title, Jonker rallies the charge for battle, with the triumph of winning his first World Championship and coveted Rainbow bands in his sights.

Event Director David Sierakowski said, ?We are thrilled to welcome such respected athletes from the world of cycling to the city of Perth for the UCI Gran Fondo World Series. The introduction of Robbie McEwen as Event Ambassador, and particularly his JOIN the RIDE initiative, should open the doors to the masses and stimulate greater participation in this exciting event.?

?In September, we will be welcoming cyclists from across the globe who will be competing to be crowned World Champion, and with the new Elizabeth Quay development, there?s no better time than the GFWS to have all eyes on Perth, Western Australia.?
