It was cool and breezy conditions for the Under-23 Men as they fought it out this morning for the green and gold stripes. The expectation of race was a repeat of last year?s nailbiter of a finish between Oscar Stevenson and Miles Scotson, but in the end it was the younger Scotson, Callum, who stole the headlines with his superb ride. The Scotson brothers did the 1-2 and celebrated in style on the podium where the brothers sprayed each other with champagne.

1st – Callum Scotson 37:39.64 (Team Illuminate) ?It was just a perfect race. Coming across the line, I knew what time my brother had posted to win last year and I was under it, I was so stoked. I?ve calmed a bit now, but for the first ten minutes I was like ?this can?t be happening?. I personally thought he (Miles) was going to beat me today, but we don?t let the competition get between us. I took it fairly steady, that?s the way you have to ride this course, I waited to the first long hill most of the way out on the course to the turnaround and that?s where I really started to turn it on, and then you can keep building on that all the way home.?

2nd ? Miles Scotson 38:00.43 +20.7 (Team Illuminate) ?I was confident that my form was good enough to win, I was better than last year. We (Miles and Callum Scotson) were neck and neck last week, not an inch between us. I was hoping Callum would podium today and I would get the win. I knew that I?d done a really good ride out to the turnaround then I lost my rhythm a bit on the way back. They said 2nd over the line, and I was like ?Oh no?, then they said Callum won it and that was a really good moment. He?s just done an elite ride, 405 Watts for 40 minutes out there, that would hack it in the elite field. It?s going to be good, Callum hasn?t raced much outside of Australia before, it?s going to be good for Callum, he?s normally a bit more quiet, so getting outside his comfort zone, going overseas where he?ll have to fend for himself a bit will be good. When the team came to me, I said that I?ll come on board but that they had to take my brother as well. I think they?re going to be pretty happy that they took both of us now.?

3rd ? Ben O?Connor 38:52.08 +1:12.4 (Avanti IsoWhey Sports) ?It?s a lot better than I did last year, obviously you always aim for the top step, but I?m really happy with 3rd. It?s ideal having the tailwind on the way back, as it lets you ramp it up mentally. It?s just about controlling it, sitting on that threshold, increasing it a bit up the hills and then make some gains on the way back. I had Andrew (Christie-Johnston) in my ear giving me encouragement, but when you?re out there, you?re dreaming of the win and that gives you plenty of motivation.?
