Australia?s number one ranked UCI Continental and domestic team Avanti Racing Team will be registered in New Zealand for the 2015 season and beyond. The team made the decision after many months of exploring different growth options and avenues that will allow its continued success and viability. Team co-owners Andrew Christie-Johnston and Steve Price have been at the helm in Australia for the last 14 years, but after coming tantalisingly close to landing a big partner for naming rights sponsor Avanti on more than one occasion, decided that a change of scenery and country could be a good thing. ?Clearly the sponsorship space is a tough one at the moment and in Australia, despite our success both on the road and in developing riders, we still struggle year to year to ensure the team?s viability,? said Price. ?We also have to compete for sponsors and race starts with a World Tour Team, a Pro Continental Team, and two other Continental Teams. By taking this move we hope to become a team that represents the entire Oceania region and in doing so help provide a pathway for young talented NZ riders who to date haven?t had as many opportunities as they should. ?The Australian National Road Series will remain one of our key objectives, as will racing in New Zealand, but we hope that as the only New Zealand Continental team race organisers in Asia and the United States will see fit to invite us to their events so we get a chance to show what we can really do.? The team has the full backing of?its existing sponsors and sees its increased reach as providing an even better return on investment for them. Sheppard Industries (Avanti) CEO Steve Paraskevas is right behind the move. ?We?re really excited at the opportunity that Avanti Racing Team offers through becoming a truly Australasian team,? Paraskevas said. ?We have been part of the Avanti Racing Team family for the past five years and look forward to continuing this alignment for the exciting year ahead.” Current team member and reigning New Zealand National Time Trial champion Taylor Gunman is excited at the prospect of more of his countrymen getting the chance to race on the team. ??The Avanti Racing Team registering in New Zealand for 2015 provides a great opportunity for Kiwi riders to take an important step towards the top ranks,? Gunman said. ?Avanti Racing Team boasts an impressive alumnus with riders like Richie Porte of Team SKY and hopefully in the future we can add some Kiwi talent to the honour roll of riders that the team has successfully developed.” The team will now examine the roster and look at recruiting aspiring Kiwi riders they feel will fit with the team?s ethos and race calendar.
