Fraser Gough Takes Out Stage 3 Of The 2014 Tour of Southland

Dry conditions greeted the riders at the start of Stage 3 of the SBS Bank Tour of Southland today as they departed from Riverton, heading towards Te Anau with the famed Blackmount Hill climb before them. Good conditions saw a strong fast peloton not willing to let a break form for the first part of the race. The first hour saw 48km raced, with many small attacks and breakaway attempts thwarted. Finally after some 60km the five rider break of the day managed to establish themselves, animated strongly by Luke Macpherson – H&J Smiths Outdoor World. The break also included Jesco Hydraulics KOM leader Thomas Stewart – Team Cromwell and Fraser Gough – Kia Motors-Ascot Park Hotel. Stewart was keen to consolidate his lead in the KOM jersey and would lead Macpherson over the top of the Blackmount Hill climb with a lead of two minutes on the peloton. The peloton itself split on the climb. A 24-strong group of chasers, including SBS Bank Tour leader Ben Hill, began working to catch the leaders, with the peloton re-formed not far behind. Macpherson and Gough led towards Manapouri before the other break riders began to work again. The gap had been reducing since Blackmount and got to 23 seconds before the breakaway got back together and opened the gap again. The chasers and peloton got together in the last 10km, but left their chase too late. Gough kicked away from the break in the last 500 metres to take the Distinction Hotels stage win on the Te Anau waterfront. Hill would lead the peloton across the line soon after to retain his yellow jersey. Macpherson?s efforts again saw him take the Southland Times Most Combative jersey after already having the honour after Stage One. Meanwhile, the Stonewood Homes Silver Jersey Over 40s remains with Justin Stott (Placemakers), the Henderson Construction U23 Jersey remains with Hayden McCormick (Breads of Europe-All About Plumbing), the Jesco Hydraulics KOM stays with Thomas Stewart (Team Cromwell), the Harcourts Sprint Ace stays with Jacob Grieve (Pure South) and the Wensley?s Cycles Team Classification is still being led by Avanti Racing Team. 2014 Tour of Southland: Stage 3 Results Images copyright James Jubb Envious Photography
