Melbourne has been announced as host of the inaugural Cyclo-Cross National Championships in August this year, bringing the fast-growing hybrid of mountain biking and road racing to the city?s northern and western suburbs. ?A UCI-sanctioned national championship is important for raising the profile of the category in Australia,? said Cyclo-Cross Commission Chair Gemma Kernich. The event is part of a blockbuster weekend of CX action ? August 10-11 ? with the national titles held on the Saturday on a purpose-built course at Cranwell Park in Maribyrnong before the XC National Series (NCXS) concludes at Darebin Parklands, on the Sunday. The elite course is expected to include many technical sections concluding with a steep hill climb, making it one of the toughest in Australia. ?The hosting of the national championships reflects the sustained growth of the discipline in Victoria and throughout Australia. Cyclo-Cross is here to stay and presents a?popular new racing option?for cycling enthusiasts,? explained Kipp Kaufmann, General Manager of Cycling Victoria. Current NCXS leaders Rowena Fry (TAS) and Paul van der Ploeg (VIC) will be two of the big names challenging for the maiden national title. ?The domestic series is in its second year so the progression to a full-blown nationals as part of the broader season is fantastic and I?m aiming to give it a real crack,? said van der Ploeg, the reigning national cross country eliminator champion. Undefeated in the NCXS after four rounds, Fry is thrilled to have a chance to race for the green and gold jersey.? ?The event is super exciting for CX and the entire sport of cycling in Australia,? Fry explained. ?Racing for the opportunity to wear the first ever Aussie CX jersey makes it special indeed. It’s a very proud feeling wearing the green and gold bands so hopefully I can experience it again soon.? Round one and two of the NCXS were held in Adelaide, SA while rounds three and four were recently held in Sydney, NSW. The Australian Cyclo-Cross National Championships are presented by Cycling Australia and Mountain Bike Australia in conjunction with Cycling Victoria.
