Soaking rain from a furious thunderstorm did not stop the NSW Criterium Championships from being run and won at the Sydney Dragway on Saturday 20 February. Nor did it stop spectators staying at the track, after huddling under the limited covered areas or hiding in their cars while the storm hit.
We were treated to some fantastic criterium racing with almost race long break aways in all four races, some amazing super-smooth cornering skills and only a few riders falling onto the wet roads.
The picture on the left was taken as the U19 men were getting ready to race on a very soggy shortened track as the lights were starting to take effect. With a shortened track in use the Under 19 Men, Under 23 Men and Elite Men all raced separately.
The Elite and U19 Women were fortunate to have most of their race in dry conditions, however the last 3 or 4 laps saw drips turn into storms and they all finished drenched right through.
While we would have preferred dryer and safer conditions, the riders showed their amazing level of skill by adapting to the conditions and putting on some great racing. Well done to all who participated and to those who decided not to race in the wet, fair enough.
