Peter Koning (Drapac Professional Cycling) has won Tour de San Luis stage 3 in La Punta after an amazing solo attack with 30 km to go. ?Fernando Gaviria (Etixx QuickStep) was second at 1?37? ahead of Travis Mccabe (Holowesko Citadel) who took third place and Peter Sagan (Tinkoff) who was fourth at the finish.
The break of the day formed with Peter Koning (Drapac), Emmanuel Guevara (San Luis), Elias Tello (Chilean National Team) and Gonzalo Najar (S.E.P. San Juan) took a maximum lead of six minutes with 75 km to go. Dutch Koning began the war with 30 km to go as Najar dropped out of the front group due to a mechanical problem. ?Guevara and Tello tried to catch the Drapac rider, but they did not succeed and were absorbed by a group of 15 riders composed out of Fernando Gaviria, Peter Sagan, Nairo Quintana and Alexis Vuillermoz, among others. The select group aimed stage victory, but Koning carried out an outstanding climb to Mirador del Potrero and with 11 km to go made a risky descent to claim victory in La Punta.
Gaviria sprinted to finish second and get the time bonus. But it was not enough to keep the leader?s jersey. Koning takes race leader with an advantage of six seconds on Gaviria, 22 seconds on Maximiliano Richeze and Rodrigo Contreras, 30 seconds on Dani Moreno, Nairo and Dayer Quintana, and 39 seconds on Peter Sagan, Miguel A. Lopez and Vincenzo Nibali.
Koning, who was individual time trial national champion in junior and under-23 categories, was ?really really happy? in the press conference. ?I made the decision of attacking earlier because I needed at least two minutes before the climb? said the 25-year-old Dutch. Gaviria thought that he ?could fight for victory? when he was able to climb the Mirador del Potrero together with the best riders of the peloton, but finally ?the escapees were too far.?
