For 20 year old Chris Aitken, a quick trip overseas for a bike race has been the norm for the past 4 years. The boy from Wangi Wangi NSW has traveled to Europe and New Zealand in the past representing Australia at Junior world mountain biking championships and world cup rounds, plus three trips to the French Pacific with his Paradice road team. But earlier this week Aitken boarded the big bird in Sydney once again to travel to the USA for the very first time, for his first international cyclocross event, CrossVegas in Las Vegas, Nevada. CrossVegas is the biggest cyclocross race in America.? The night-time race takes place in September each year at the Desert Breeze Soccer Complex in Las Vegas, Nevada, just minutes from the famous Vegas Strip. CrossVegas has seen impressive growth since its inaugural race in 2007, ?and each year attracts an increasingly elite field of U.S. and foreign racers as well as over 10,000 spectators.? Despite its relatively short history, CrossVegas has quickly ascended to the top of the international cylcocross racing scene and now boasts the accolade of being America’s biggest cyclocross race. Aitken will be representing the Focus Bikes Australia CX Team alongside his team mates, Australian under 23 champion Tom Chapman and Jade Lean. Fellow Aussie Gary Milburn, who has been Aitken’s nemesis on many occasions this cyclocross season, will also be in attendance. “I have really focused on the cyclocross this season” Aitken said “It is a discipline that really suits me and I have had great support from Focus this year, so I really have to thank them and also the cyclocross Newcastle contingent for getting me here.” Aitken who is targeting selection for the world cyclocross championships in January admits racing CrossVegas will be a good experience, but as is the unpredictability of the discipline, anything can happen on the night. “There will be crashes, it will be hectic, I will be starting towards the back (due to rankings) but hopefully I can keep out of trouble and pick my way through the field.” CrossVegas will be streamed live online via BTBTV, and will commence at 12.45pm tomorrow afternoon.
