Today’s 183.5 kilometer long and not least mountainous 16th stage of Vuelta a Espana was probably the second last chance for the GC favorites to make the crucial difference before Saturday’s definitive final mountain battle. And Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank put a huge pressure on the field by setting a high pace along the way. The stretch from Gijon to Valgrande Parajes contained two category-1 climbs and an uphill finish over 19 kilometers with an average gradient of 7 %. The favorites didn’t catch the escapees and on the finish line, Dario Cataldo (Omega-Pharma Quick Step) won a fantastic stage win. The Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank squad split the field in to bits and pieces and [W:Alberto Contador] once again tried to conquer the leader’s jersey by launching a series of deep attacks on [W:Joaquin Rodriguez] (Katusha) and created a sensationally thrilling bike race. And Alberto was able to drop everyone else except Rodriguez: ?Once again, the boys did an amazing job in the front of the field and there’s really nothing more they can do. Alberto keeps pushing and punching away without even looking back but Rodriguez is still very strong. However, the race is not over until we reach Madrid and we’ll keep insisting to get the win,? said Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank sports director, Bradley McGee after the stage.

Alberto Contador and Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank provided a magnificent show on today’s marathon mountain stage:

?I’m thrilled with the way we’re doing this race. Today, we tried hard once again but regardless of the result and the fact that Joaquin showed immense power, I’m very happy with the race we’re doing. I think we are really adding the colors and excitement to this race so far but sure, to be dropping Joaquin would have been the icing on the cake. Today, I was feeling better than yesterday and I put in all my power in every attempt to get away. Thanks to all the people who have come here today to support me. They truly move me when we are parting the sea of people going uphill. It was a real spectacle,? Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank’s Alberto Contador said tonight.
