By Jayden Copp?- @jaydencopp Stage 1 of the Tour of the Murray River kicked off today with a 155.6km road race from Mildura to Robinvale. It was a typical northern Victoria Day with a slight cool breeze and sunny sky’s, ideal racing conditions. After a 10-week break in the NRS there were a lot of nervous and enthusiastic competitors. We had 7km of neutral before the race kicked off. Personally, I was extremely excited to be back home racing in Australia after spending 3 months racing in Belgium so when kilometre 0 came up I couldn’t help myself but to get out and stretch my legs and try force that early break, there were a lot small breaks at the start that looked to be the ones the peloton would let go but in the end the peloton were happy to let 3 riders roll off the front at about 40kms in after the second sprint. I was keen to ride the break today but with only 3 guys I thought that would be silly to waste so much energy so soon in the tour, so my day consisted of a bit of chit chat and a bit of catching up with guys I hadn’t seen in a while back in the peloton and to let the big teams control it. Save energy for another day. After multiple crashes throughout the stage and a high pace set by the chasing teams the break was brought back with only 5km to go. We managed to ride great position leading into the finish and had 2 guys in the top 10 and 4 in the top 20. Double race day tomorrow stay tuned.
