Andre Greipel survived a tough, hilly ride in the sun to win the longest stage of the 2013 Tour of Turkey in Turgutreis on Thursday, 24 hours after his 8th stage victory in the Turkish race in Marmaris. To make it nine, the massive German was again strong enough to stay with the best in the day’s merciless 1st category climb before imposing his terminal speed ahead of Italy’s Matteo Trentin (OPQ) and up-and-coming fellow-German Nikias Arndt (ARG). Isolated at the front, Eritrea’s Natnael Berhane (EUC) still showed enough guts and class to retain his overall leader’s Turquoise jersey. The race started without Manuel Cardoso (CJR), injured in yesterday’s crash. With a tough climb early in the stage, the peloton split almost from the start and a group of about 70 riders emerged, involving all the jersey holders. The rest of the field lagged nearly five minutes adrift when the race tackled the ascent overlooking the Gokova bay. Yoann Bagot (COF) and Serge Pauwels (OPQ) surged as the road went up, followed by Nacim Bakirci (TRK), and when he punctured by red jersey holder Sergey Grechin. The Ukrainian strengthened his lead in the mountain classification by coming first at the top ahead of Pauwels and Bagot while his team-mates Bakirci and David De La Fuente stole the other available points to protect their leader. The first half of the peloton were 1:10 adrift at the top. On the plateau leading to Bodrum, eight riders, Christopher Juul Jensen (TST), Maxim Belkov (KAT), Sebastien Duret (BSE), Angelo Pagani (BAR), Guillaume Levarlet (COF), Eduardo Chalapud (COL), Marc De Maar (UHC) and Nacim Bakirci (TRK) broke clear. The move was all the more threatening for overall leader Berhane as Pagani lied 13th in the GC, 53 seconds behind him. Unfortunately for Berhane, only Bjorn Thurau managed to stay with him in the leading group while all his other team-mates were stuck in the dropped bunch, who kept losing ground as the race went on. In the long 40 kms stretch towards the ancient city of Bodrum, Belkov, winner of the Turkish Beauties Classification a year ago, went solo while the break split up, dropping De Maar then Pagani with 25 kms to go. The original escapees were all finally reined in, leaving Belkov to fend for himself on the last 20 kms. But as French team Cofidis sided with Thurau to chase, the Russian had to be content with winning the Turkish Beauties Sprint in Bodrum before calling it a day. Berhane was again tested on the finale, when runner-up Kevin Seeldraeyers, his Astana team-mate Andrei Kashechkin, Australian Cameron Meyer or Grechyn briefly attempted to go. But the young Eritrean kept his cool. In the last kilometre, Filippo Pozzato (LAM) fired the last bullets before Greipel rose on his pedals to easily pass the Italian and add a line to his Turkish record in Turgutreis, the city named after 15th century Ottoman sailor Turgut Reis.
