My enthusiasm must have waned by this stage as I didn?t bother with a pre roll or even a warm up. I put all my ?energy? into sitting around near the start line for 20 minutes to ensure a spot near the front. I think this was a solid move. As we rolled off it became obvious that moving up in the first 20 minutes was going to sap a lot of energy. I was maybe 40 back and pretty much held this position from start to finish. I ventured into the wind on rare occasions but it was a scary place out there and I quickly took my place back in the queue. The bunch was quickly reducing in size and was probably only 50/60 riders with 10 laps to go. Up front guys like Peterson and the Budget/Avanti guys were actually racing. That would have been nice. The rest of us suffered. Search2Retain were huge and kept a lid on everything AND managed to finish 1st and 2nd. Very impressive. I found myself on the wrong end of the final split with 5 laps to go and rolled in around 30th, 30 odd seconds down (which, if you read my stage 1 report, you will know means probably a bit more than 30 seconds down). Josh finished up front to move to 11th on GC and the team did enough to finish 8th on teams GC. We are hopeful of improving on both at Tassy in a week. Thanks again to everyone involved with the team, especially MEGAN and Rusty. Special mention to Cam Fraser who had a mechanical yesterday but took on toilet line up duties so the rest of us could lie back and relax before our nervous pre stage toilet trips. Thanks mate. To end on a familiar note – I’m off to find some food.

We knew just how brutal this course was going to be. Just watching the faces during the support race and then the women?s race was enough to make my legs burn.? Personally that led to mixed emotions for me. I knew exactly how tough this crit was going be but I had found some form again during the morning?s stage (after rolling in close to last up Honeysuckle!).

Our team strategy was pretty simple. Stay safe, survive as long as possible and look after each other as best as we could. As always the first race was for starting position. On a short sharp course like this it was even more important and as soon as the women had rolled across for their finish the blokes were racing through any gap in the barrier they could find.

After a quick race brief from commissaire Bill Walker we were away ? a full on sprint to the top corner, then a big jam as the road narrowed into the first right hander. By that first turn I had lost track of any Phoenix team mates. After one lap the field was strung out over a third of the course. When you are squeezing through a corner at 20km/h and you can see the front end having exited the corner after that and already climbing at 40km/h, you know it?s going to hurt.

I identified a few riders who were a bit stronger than me, but not so strong that they?d disappear up the road on me, and I stuck to them. The tactic was working well for me. My legs were screaming and we were strung out in single file, but pedals kept turning each lap and we remained in touch with the bunch.

Unfortunately a rider came down going through the corner that leads into the uphill straight causing us to brake and a gap of about 50 metres opened up. I tried to push it up the hill and I managed to hold the gap down the other side, but then it was too much. A couple of guys managed to bridge across, but for the rest of us that was the end of our contact. I ended up with a group who were still keen to race though, and found myself riding on the wheels of our two guest riders, Paddy Corcoran and Sam Moorby. We knew we?d get pulled eventually, but with the group willing to work we did manage to stay in the race for a while. I ended up getting pulled after 20 minutes of racing, which might not sound like a lot, but on that course with that field, I was pretty happy.

That gave me plenty of racing to watch and we still had Craig Evers sitting up front and looking in reasonable condition. But in the end, after suffering a migraine through the night and having a solid dig in the morning stage, he wasn?t feeling the passion for the pain and he pulled the pin.

The finish was great to watch with Avanti trying to take the race on, but the h

health.com.au Search2Retain team was superb, not only defending the yellow jersey of Pat Bevin but getting Alistair Donohoe up for the stage win. Special mention has to go to the talented Ayden Toovey (Subaru NSWIS) who shook up the status quo with a daring attack on the final lap, only just getting pipped but still hanging on for third.? This was a tough but rewarding tour for us. We started with Evers smashing out a great ITT in stage 1, but in that same stage we lost two riders to the time cut. Stage 2 was simply a brute, with all the guys riding really well but me suffering and finishing well behind. Stage 3 we missed the main break but worked together really well to try for a long shot with 4km to go. Stage 4 was leg-sapping, rewarding and spectacular.

Finally, I?d like to pay tribute to the locals ? the organisers and officials, the army of volunteers, and the great cheer squads we had on the road.? Once again Mick Fay put on a great tour showcasing the best of our city and its surrounds. We did (now famously) protest the time cuts in stage 1, and though it was rejected, we thank Mick and the commissaries for giving it such thoughtful consideration. The volunteers? Well, we wouldn?t have bike races without them. The roads we raced on were not only challenging for the riders ? they are also pretty epic to marshal. We?re deeply grateful to those who gave their weekend so that we could have such a great race. Finally, the local supporters. The hometown support on this final day was amazing. All round the circuit this morning and at every corner and straight on the crit track this afternoon there were cheers and encouragement. Thanks to you all – it makes a huge difference!

Ben Dyball won it solo from a long way out. Trying to watch what?s happening ahead while struggling with what?s happening below can be difficult! On to this morning?s Stage 3?I was looking forward to this one. Four laps around the lake. With Avanti sitting 2nd, 3rd and 4th there was bound to be some aggressive riding to tire Search2Retain before the crit but the course favoured a bunch kick. Our plan was to be discussed at the team dinner in Woden last night but a quick vote saw dinner shelved. Tiredness and fear of Woden won out over team bonding. Like a lot of riders, I saw this stage as an exercise in energy conservation but would take an opportunity if it presented. The carnage was likely to occur in the afternoon crit. My biggest concern turned from the stage to my clothes. Two stages left and only one fresh pair of knicks. Hmm. I thought I?d packed plenty but this pre roll business had me in disarray. After smelling the various used options one was decidedly less feral than the rest. No one would know. The race. As per usual every rider in the race HAD to be on the front couple of rows at the start. This was actually achieved as riders fanned across the road and beyond to create 3-4 rows of riders 40 wide. So not pro. But then most?of us are so not pro. The attacks started immediately but it took a while for anything to stick. I was in position to go with it but didn?t. My internal conversation below: ?Move up… looks those guys are going to jump… go with them! Hmm, no, no wait, too much of a gap, go with the next guy. Damn… no, next guy. The break is going. You can still get across… no no… too much energy. Wow, that gap got big quick. Oh great NOW everyone sits up for a chat. Jeez should have gone. Loser.? The break lasted the distance which was a fair effort. Well done to Restall for the win and Pete Milostic and Matt Clarke who stood next to him on the podium. Our guys finished safely in the bunch except for the two who crashed and didn?t finish safely at all. Bad luck to Declan and Andrew. The team retained 6th on teams GC but with only four guys left we will all need to be on for the crit. Food.

Stage Three of the National Capital Tour was a great race for the team. The pace was on the whole time, the bunch was all together and nobody was getting away until the second last lap.

The team plan was formulated prior to the race, and involved setting up a leadout for Craig close to the end of the race. On course after the race began, Craig had a word to Simon to start forming up at the second KOM point in the second last lap.

A break had formed with Avanti Racing and Cellarbrations, and it was well away from the peloton, but all the guys were keen to put the team plan into action anyway. Simon went to the right to the front as planned, and there were a couple of exciting moments as we realised that we were forming up next to a group of Budget riders.

Sam hopped onto Simon’s wheel, and made sure that noone took it from him – even pushing around some better placed teams to make sure that our leadout would form together as planned.

Simon hit the gas at the second KOM point as planned, punching off the front. Sam then dropped the hammer, putting 400m into the bunch and sprinting at 1600 watts with Craig on his wheel.

Craig came around Sam with 3km to go, and made a 800 metre gap, which slowly got brought back by six Budget riders at the front of the chasing peloton.

Craig got caught with 200m to go, and quickly got shelled as the major teams executed their leadout strategies.

Despite the team plan not working out, the teamwork by our guys was absolutely fantastic. Dave unfortunately got a flat as we were forming out leadout, and had to struggle back to the finish line on his own. We are recovering under the marquee watching the NRS women battle it out in the crit, and are keen to have a final push in the final stage of the National Capital Tour.

Patrick Bevin & Ellen Skerritt Claim 2014 National Capital Tour https://pelotoncafe.com.au/patrick-bevin-ellen-skerritt-claim-2014-national-capital-tour/ https://pelotoncafe.com.au/patrick-bevin-ellen-skerritt-claim-2014-national-capital-tour/#respond Sat, 20 Sep 2014 13:00:00 +0000 https://pelotoncafe.com.au/2014/09/21/patrick-bevin-ellen-skerritt-claim-2014-national-capital-tour/ New Zealand?s Patrick Bevin (health.com.au/search2retain) and Queensland?s Ellen Skerritt (Holden Women?s Cycling) have claimed overall honours at the Vie National Capital Tour. Both Bevin and Skerritt claimed the opening stage time trial and climbed to top five placings on Honeysuckle on Saturday before consolidating their leads on the final day in Canberra. Men’s report? New Zealand?s Patrick Bevin (health.com.au/search2retain) has been crowed Vie13 Tour of Canberra champion after a strong display across the three day, four staged event. The Commonwealth Games track star impressed on Friday when he claimed the opening stage time trial before rallying to finish in fifth place atop of Honeysuckle on Saturday. ?It?s an amazing day, it?s the maiden Tour win for the Health.com.au/search2retain team, it?s a big step for the team,? said Bevin. ?I?ve just come back off a break from racing after the Commonwealth Games, and it?s only my second road race for three months. ?It wasn?t an easy Tour, it?s a great feeling.? Bevin took out the Tour ahead of Ben Dyball (Avanti Racing) and Subaru National Road Series leader Joe Cooper (Avanti Racing). With Parliament House in the background, Bevin consolidated his lead on the final day, finishing safely in the peloton on stage three before racing to second place in the concluding stage behind teammate and current para-cycling road world champion Alistair Donohoe. ?It?s a massive win for me, it?s my maiden stage victory and I couldn?t be happier to do it like I did,? said Donohoe. ?I didn?t even think until the last 400m that I?d even have a shot at taking the stage win, it?s still sinking in,? said Donohoe. Donohoe took out the stage ahead of Bevin and Ayden Toovey (NSWIS). ?Ayden Toovey was off the front and we had Cam Bayly and Brendan Canty chase him down, and then I just got to the front on the back straight and took both corners perfectly. It?s unbelievable,? he said. Earlier in the day, Queensland’s Jacob?Restall (CharterMason) claimed his first Subaru National Road Series stage.?Read stage three report here. The Subaru NRS continues with the Tour of Tasmania from September 30 – October 5. Women’s report? Gold Coast?s Ellen Skerritt (Holden Women?s Cycling) has claimed her maiden overall Tour victory, taking out the Vie13 National Capital Tour. Skerritt blitzed the opening time trial before showing her strengths on the queen stage of the three day Tour, cresting the climb to Honeysuckle in second place. The 19-year-old took out the Tour ahead of teammate and current Subaru National Road Series leader Ruth Corset while Canberra?s Alex Nicholls (Suzuki Brumby?s) finished third. ?I?ve never won a Tour before, it?s my first NRS win and I?m really happy. I?ve also moved up to second in the NRS standings so that?s a really big deal for me,? said Skerritt. Skerritt rode aggressively to secure the overall victory, claiming line honours in the final stage criterium after initiating a three-women breakaway on lap one of 40. Skerritt then attacked her breakaway companions on the bell lap to seal the win. ?It wasn?t exactly the plan to go first lap but we just happened to be in that position and it actually worked quite well,? she said. Teammate and fellow escapee Corset finished second on the stage while Canberra?s Allison Rice rounded out the podium – her third visit to the podium in four stages. ?I didn?t really expect to do so well this Tour so it was a nice surprise to see the form was there. The criterium was really hard today but I wanted to go out there and put it all on the line,? said Rice who was third in the time trial and second in stage three?s road race. Earlier in the day, 2013 criterium national champion Kimberly Wells (Specialized Securitor) took out stage three. Read stage three report here. The women’s Subaru NRS concludes?with the Tour of the Goldfields from October 17 – 19 in Ballarat. Images copyright?Fred Marzano
