Peloton Cafe || 2014 Tour of Tasmania – Josh Berry
The Sydney-based Cellarbrations Racing Team has continued its rapid rise to prominence in the Subaru National Road Series with a series of breakout results at the recently completed Tour of Tasmania. The result was headlined by Wollongong-based Josh Berry, who finished 8th overall and 1st on the SRAM King of the Mountains Classification. But Berry was far from alone, with exciting Inverell Under 19 Dylan Sunderland also securing 6th in the Young Rider Classification (32nd overall) and Scott Bradburn finishing in a fine 23rd on GC. Despite completing the six-stage Tour with only three riders, CRT also managed to finish 5th on the overall Team Classification, ahead of several of the NRS?s largest squads, capping a landmark week for the young team. ?This is the toughest tour on the NRS calendar, both from a perspective of terrain and weather, so to finish fifth ahead of teams like Budget Forklifts is just a massive achievement in our first NRS season,? said a justifiably proud Team Director, Russell Menzies. ?After finishing just outside the top-10 at the recent National Capital Tour, Josh was outstanding yet again,? continued Menzies. ?Especially on Stage 4 when he won both of the?KOMs to secure the overall polka-dot jersey ? that?s our first ever classification victory in the NRS. But really, the whole squad was just outstanding this week and worked so hard as a unit to look after Josh, and each other, it?s such a satisfying moment for all of us.? Next up for Cellarbrations Racing Team is the 273km Melbourne to Warrnambool Classic on Saturday 11 October, the 99th edition of Australia?s oldest road race. A fortnight later the 2014 NRS season concludes with the gruelling Grafton to Inverell Classic. Cellarbrations Racing Team squad for 2014 Melbourne to Warrnambool: Josh Berry, Kris Johnston, Matt Slee, Aaron Watts, Andreas Pihl Neilsen (U23), Andrew Arundell.

Patrick Bevin (health.com.au-search2retain) added his name to the illustrious Tour of Tasmania honours list on Sunday, joining the likes of Cadel Evans and Richie Porte as winners of the marquee Subaru National Road Series event. Having finished second in the gruelling opening stage individual time trial to the summit of Mt Wellington, Bevin fought hard to clinch the Tour lead after winning stage four in the seaside town of Penguin. From there, the New Zealander set about consolidating his advantage, sprinting to a second stage victory on Saturday in Burnie. On the final day, riders contested a 30-lap criterium around Devonport with Bevin finishing safely in the bunch to seal his yellow jersey, 27 seconds ahead of Ben Dyball (Avanti Racing) and over one minute to Tim Roe (Budget Forklifts). ?I feel a little bit out of place to be honest,? Bevin admitted when asked about being alongside Evans and Porte as a winner of the prestigious Tour. ?I?m absolutely ecstatic. When I looked at the season this was the biggest NRS race for me, so to win it is a fantastic achievement and something I?ll be proud of for the rest of my career. ?The whole team has been phenomenal for the last two weeks,? Bevin added. ?We sat down after the stage when I first took the yellow jersey and were kind of like ? this is almost a little silly being an amateur team racing at the front of this bike race, but it shows what happens when you band together and really get behind someone.? Miles Scotson (SASI Cycling Team) held off a chasing peloton to take final stage honours, followed in by teammate Alexander Edmondson and Myron Simpson (Team Budget Forklifts). A four man breakaway of Scotson, Raphael Freinstein (CharterMason Giant Racing), Travis Meyer (Drapac Professional Cycling), and Joshua Prete (Team Budget Forklifts) broke away early, with Germany?s Freinstein collecting both intermediate sprints. Despite building a 36 second lead at the halfway mark, the peloton closed in fast and looked likely to catch the group on the final lap. However Scotson had other ideas, and pushed away on the back straight to secure victory. ?I was up and down all day in the break, and I wasn?t confident,? Scotson admitted after the criterium. ?I was actually hoping it would come back together so that Alex Edmondson could have the sprint because I wasn?t sure about taking Freinstein, he?s pretty quick. But being a track rider, when the others sat up on the back straight I just went as hard as I could and did not look back.? Josh Berry (Cellarbrations Racing Team) held on to the SRAM King of the Mountain jersey, while Freinstein won the Jayco Sprinters Classification with his final day efforts. Having worn the Premax Young Rider?s jersey all week, Nicholas Katsonis retained it with a 29th place finish in Devonport. Avanti Racing took out the team general classification, while Joseph Cooper retains his position as aggregate series leader. The Subaru National Road Series continues with the 99th edition of the Melbourne to Warrnambool Cycling Classic on Saturday 11 October. Text via Cycling Australia Media Release

Back-to-Back Victories For Brilliant Patrick Bevin https://pelotoncafe.com.au/back-to-back-victories-for-brilliant-patrick-bevin/ https://pelotoncafe.com.au/back-to-back-victories-for-brilliant-patrick-bevin/#respond Fri, 03 Oct 2014 13:00:00 +0000 https://pelotoncafe.com.au/2014/10/04/back-to-back-victories-for-brilliant-patrick-bevin/ A second consecutive bunch sprint victory has Patrick Bevin (health.com.au-search2retain) one stage away from claiming the Tour of Tasmania crown, after an emphatic win in Burnie on Saturday. Under cloudy north coast skies, Bevin all but ensured that he will take out the prestigious Tour after Sunday?s criterium to join an illustrious list of previous winners including Cadel Evans and Richie Porte. The New Zealander asserted himself early, leading several attacks through the rolling hills before allowing a non-threatening breakaway to go up the road. Despite building a two minute advantage at one point, the group of Raphael Freinstein (Charter-Mason), Mark O?Brien (Avanti Racing), Bernard Sulzberger (Drapac Pro Cycling), Taylor Gunman (Avanti Racing) and Ryan Cavanagh (Jayco/John West/VIS) were caught with 500 metres to go. Bevin powered ahead to beat Tasmania’s Wesley Sulzberger (Drapac Pro Cycling) and Commonwealth Gold medallist Alexander Edmondson (SASI) to record his second stage victory in a time of 2:04.33 over the 81.3 kilometre course. ?I was staying out of trouble in the sprint, and then it just opened up in front of me,? Bevin commented post-race. ?I was probably a little bit lucky with Edmondson having some gear troubles with 100 metres to go. I guess that?s what happens when you?re in the right place at the right time and you are in good form.? With a 22 second lead over Ben Dyball (Avanti Racing) in the general classification, Bevin only needs a safe bunch finish on Sunday to secure the yellow leader?s jersey. ?It?s not over yet by any means, there is still plenty of bike racing to come, but today was a big step and it is a great feeling,? he continued. ?When the form?s good and you have a team like health.com.au-search2retain behind you, it makes my job really easy.? Bevin was followed to the line by Tasmanian rider Sulzberger, who was looking forward to the final day of racing after narrowly missing out on a second stage win in Burnie. ?I don?t mind a criterium, so I?ll be aggressive tomorrow and if my brother [Bernard Sulzberger] isn?t too tired from today?s stage he is also really good at crits,? the Drapac Pro Cycling rider added. ?We?ll definitely be active tomorrow.? Sulzberger also singled out Bevin for praise, with the health.com.au-search2retain rider in a purple patch after winning the Vie13 National Capital Tour last month. ?Bevin has been really impressive, and his team have also been really strong here ? they?ve all lifted together. He?s got a lot of support and is a very classy rider,? said Sulzberger The Tour concludes on Sunday with a 30 lap criterium in Devonport, starting at 11.00am from Bluff Road. By Eric Sheppard???health.com.au/search2retain Today was a big day at the Tour of Tasmania, it was time for the inaugural barbecue at the Big4 Ulverstone. The team plan of the day was to finish the race as fast as possible, thus leaving maximum time to prepare for the big … meal. This handily worked alongside our need to defend the yellow jersey, and the third incentive of spots up for grabs for the team at the Noosa criterium. This criterium holds almost mythical status among Australian cyclists and before the stage Peter had let a bombshell loose: we would be competing for spots on the team directly through an intra-team competition – the rider who did the most turns on the front would receive a spot on the team. Fueled by scrambled eggs, and porridge* (covering all bases here with protein and carbs in the one meal), and one moka-pot coffee too many, our moods were only slightly dampened by the overcast day and drive to Burnie, where incidentally our enthusiasm had caused us to be the first team to arrive – for the first, and likely last – time ever. Early in the race, our team leader Paddy made the first play for a Noosa spot, deciding that he would go into breakaway himself and get some turns on the board. Unfortunately for him, he quickly ended up the road solo and realised that in this case it would only count as a single turn, no matter how long it went for. Eventually another breakaway formed, and satisfied that no health.com.au-search2retain riders were inside, and thus able to sneak in some extra turns, we formed up at the front, seemingly in an effort to neutralise ourselves and make sure everyone was on an even footing. This was where the tactics started to come into play, and riders were seen attempting to push back into the train early rather than going to the back of the rotation. At this point we realised that there was actually another race going on, that may have been more important than competing for spots in the Noosa criterium team but we also realised that Peter may have gotten one up on us here and created a team plan without us even realising it! The next challenge of the day were the two ‘walls’ that had been etched into the memory of the riders who had raced the stage the year earlier. We knew this would be the most dangerous part of the race but despite the patches of gravel on earlier descents, the descents here were entirely free of gravel and provided minimal excitement, now that Dobby** had been relegated to the back after his earlier attempt to derail the train with a cleverly disguised de-apexing*** of an unexpected turn in the road. At this point the riders further down in the intra-team competition realised they could still thwart the plan, and tried to convince (through a carefully devised system of brake cables and bidons) the breakaway to come back – thus rendering all further turns moot. Unfortunately for them, the breakaway had other ideas, possibly even attempting to make up spots within their own intra team competitions! As we neared the final 10 kilometres of the race a number of us were neck and neck in the turn-ranking, but as we neared the end Paddy decided to take matters into his own hands and do another turn, ensuring that he finished on equal total time with Canty and Bayley. The result was a number of rounds of rock-paper-scissors and some choice words to decide who would finally prevail for the spot. To find out the eventual winner you’ll have to stay tuned for the race in Noosa itself, and see who is selected for the team! * Porridge: The official breakfast of the team, made with an exact ratio of 1:1:1, oats:water:milk, as deduced after many highly unscientific experiments. ** Dobby: Our staigiere rider, actually called Sam Dobbs, but affectionately nicknamed Dobby given he shares a name and likeness with Dobby the house elf. As he was given team socks at the start of the week he is definitely a free elf and hence S.P.E.W approved. *** de-apexing: The opposite of apexing a corner, where one attempts to take the longest and least direct line possible. New Zealand?s Patrick Bevin (health.com.au-search2retain) staged a gritty fight back to claim stage four honours and the overall Tour of Tasmania yellow leader’s jersey in Penguin on Friday. Despite being dropped from the main group on the infamous Gunns Plains climb, Bevin fought back to re-join the leaders on the descent into Penguin before out-sprinting Drapac duo Bernard Sulzberger and Lachlan Norris to clinch victory. ?I got unhitched about half way up Gunns Plains ? it?s a really steep climb. I didn?t panic, I knew I was in for a long chase. I got over the top and could see [the leaders] not far ahead. Cam [Bayly] actually dropped back and got me, and rode the last 50 or 60 metres of the chase for me ? such a selfless thing.? Bevin began the day just one second behind stage one winner and overnight Tour leader Ben Dyball (Avanti Racing). Just 20 kilometres into the 106 kilometre race from Ulverstone to Penguin, Bevin won the intermediate sprint to became the virtual leader on the road. ?I got up in the first sprint to take that time bonus. We were ready to ride like we were in the general classifications lead, so I thought we might as well take it,? Bevin commented post-race. Bevin now holds a 12 second lead over Dyball with two stages remaining, while Timothy Roe (Team Budget Forklifts), Norris and Joseph Cooper (Avanti Racing) are locked in a battle for third place. After two stage wins in two days, Drapac Pro Cycling were relegated to the minor placings as Sulzberger and Norris collected second and third respectively. Tasmanian rider Sulzberger, whose brother Wesley won stage two on Wednesday, was victorious on the charge into Penguin last year but was unable to repeat history. With two stage wins in hand and looking forward to another challenging stage on Saturday, third-placed Norris was optimistic about his team?s performance. ?I thought maybe I had it with a few hundred metres to go, but unfortunately just didn?t quite get there,? Norris conceded. ?But it was still a good day for us ? two on the podium is great. Saturday?s stage is another tough stage which suits us, so I think we?ll shake it up again in the next couple of days.? ?We did a reconnaissance of this stage two weeks ago and had a bit more time to look around, so we could really take in all the beautiful scenery. Today we obviously didn?t see quite as much, but it?s just a really pretty part of the world here,? said Norris. The Tour next heads to Burnie for an 82 kilometre road race on Saturday, before concluding with a criterium around the streets of Devonport this Sunday. Text via Cycling Australia Media Release

Peloton Cafe || 2014 Tour of Tasmania Stage 4 – Josh Berry
Tour of Tasmania, Stage 4 Report by Cellarbrations Racing Team DS, Russell Menzies ? 106km Ulverstone to Penguin. If yesterday was a good day for us, today was off the charts. Just as it was on stage 3 the plan heading off this morning was to protect both Josh and our overall team GC position. Things couldn?t have worked out much better as it turned out, because the guys not only achieved both objectives, but also managed to get Josh into the KOM leader?s jersey, Dylan up to 6th on the Young Rider Classification and even move?up?another place on the overall team GC to 5th. Really, it?s hard to imagine being any prouder of this group of young men than I am right now.   As for the stage itself?under sunny skies things kicked off in the usual fashion, with plenty of activity, but it wasn?t until the first of the day?s two Cat 2 KOMs at Geales Road that things really began to unfold. Our tireless workhorse, Matt Slee, busted a gut in those opening kms to launch our GC boys into the first critical climb, sacrificing himself on the day for the greater good of the team. As Matt inevitably drifted back, after a job very well done, Josh was busy defying gravity to take first place in the climb pretty comfortably before then putting himself in the day?s breakaway of four riders. Unlike the previous two days, the break was eventually reeled by a group of about 15 riders in the final stages, but not before Josh had gone into a deep well of pain and suffering to again summit first at the second Cat 2 KOM at the South Riana quarry, a result that netted him another 7 points and catapulted him into the outright KOM leader?s jersey. He looks good in spots and still managed to roll in 13th on the stage, on the same time as the stage winner from Search2Retain, Patrick Bevin, who now leads on GC.   Our second rider on the overall, Scott, rode strongly yet again and spent most of the stage in the second bunch on the road where he finished to move up into the top 25 overall. On a day where quite a few of the younger guys fell by the wayside it was also great to see our young U19 Dylan make a big move up on the Young Rider classification.?He has a big future this boy, a typical tough-as-nails country bike rider.   Amidst a lot of highs, the day wasn?t without its disappointments for us though. After doing a power of work for the team over the first four stages, Aaron struggled towards the end of today?s stage and unfortunately finished outside the time limit. Even worse, we found out Matt had punctured while riding comfortably in the third group on the road and with the team car at the front of the race with Josh, and had to wait an eternity for neutral service. In fact, he waited twenty-five minutes and still no service. By the time the sag wagon swept him up it?s fair to say he was not a happy boy. Neither was I when I found out what happened later. We?ve lost an important rider right when we?re in the mix at the sharp end of this Tour ? and we shouldn?t have lost him.   We may be three riders down now, but we?re still in good shape going into the weekend.?Tomorrow is a short stage at just over 80km, it’ll be done and dusted in two hours. But with two Cat 3 climbs worth 5 points each, we?ll need to play things smart to look after Josh?s KOM jersey and GC position (8th) ahead of Sunday?s crit. Mind you based on the way the last four days have gone for us I can tell you we have every confidence we?ll do it.   As I write this we?re getting sorted for dinner at the team?s hotel in Devonport. Dylan?s doing sate chicken, Aaron is whipping up a Caesar salad while Matt is making pavlova. What I see isn?t a team of cyclists, just a bunch of great mates, and the results are speaking for themselves. Bring on Stage 5. Quote of the day: ?$%#*@$%$*^ *&@$&*^%#.? Matt Slee, whilst waiting and waiting and waiting for a spare wheel.
