Cellarbrations Racing Team Gain Valuable Experience At Battle on the Border

The 2014 road season just keeps getting better for Josh Berry who secured Cellarbrations Racing Team?s (CRT) inaugural NRS podium with second overall on the Hill Climb Classification at the 2014 Battle on the Border. Despite losing team member Alex Ball through illness following the Stage One ascent of Mt Warning ? leaving CRT with a squad of just four riders ? Berry rode with a mix of nous and aggression over the five-stage event to finish just one point behind eventual Hill Climb winner, Mark O?Brien (Avanti). Jack Haig (Avanti) was one point further back in third place. ?To take second in the KOM of our first race of the season is terrific,? said CRT Team Director, Russell Menzies. ?The plan was always to attempt to launch Josh off the front for KOM points and that?s exactly how things panned out, especially on the first and second stages. The final stage on Sunday was a little different because the riders in the break weren?t going to challenge any of the GC guys, especially those from Avanti, so they were allowed to go. It was a shame we couldn?t get anyone away with them, especially Josh to have crack at the win, but that?s racing.? While disappointed for NRS debutant Alex Ball, Menzies said the team was delighted with the performances of the remaining riders which consisted of the experienced Kris Johnston plus two more debutants, Matt Slee and Cameron Fraser. ?We?re particularly pleased with how Matt and Cam rode with little to no NRS experience,? Menzies said. ?They held their own and will be even stronger up in Toowoomba. As for Kris, he?s such a smart rider and led the guys very well. It gives you so much confidence knowing he?s calling the shots out on the road. While Josh, well he?s having a great year and is only going to get better and better with more racing.? CRT?s involvement over the weekend wasn?t confined solely to the NRS event, with two riders also finishing in the top 10 of the Elite A Tour de Tweed. Supported by U23 team-mate Ethan Doughty ? who worked tirelessly following the loss through injury of Toby Orchard (U19) on Stage One ? Declan Baker (U19) rode consistently all weekend to take 7th overall while Dylan Sunderland (U19) placed third in stages three and four on the way to securing 10th overall. Next stop is the FKG Tour of Toowoomba which starts Thursday. CRT will take a full squad of eight riders to the five-stage NRS event.
