Fresh from claiming the 2016 Australian Madison title in Melbourne on Saturday night with Callum Scotson, Dan Fitter (CIC Cervélo) claimed the latest round of the CIC Cervélo Super Series in extraordinary fashion.
Fitter stormed home to claim a solo victory in front of the Victoria Park heritage grandstand following a superb breakaway with Matt Gassner (Team Lightsview) and Chris Harper (Swiss Wellness Cycling Team).
The race was full of attacks from the moment Cycling SA’s CEO, Peter Macdonald, fired the starting pistol. Harry Carpenter (CIC Cervélo) ensured the evening’s race was not going to be a leisurely pre-Christmas affair by putting pressure on the peloton through a number of attacks and covering a majority of the moves from other riders.
Series leader, Tom Kaesler (SASI), and his team were alert to the night’s attacks, making sure Kaesler was in a position to pounce if any general classification contenders forced an attack.
One of the liveliest riders in the series thus far has been Russell van Hout (Team Lightsview). After claiming Round 4 of the CIC Cervélo Super Series, Russell has been looking to climb his way up the general classification leader-board. Russell was an attacking figure throughout the 50 minute criterium – attempting to make sure he would be in an ideal position come the business-end of the race.
In the end, the trio of Gassner, Harper and Fitter were too strong for the peloton. In the final lap, Fitter forced a move and pulled away from Gassner and Harper, leaving the duo to fight it out for second position – Harper out-sprinted Gassner in the battle for crucial points.
Tom Kaesler still leads the series. However, he is set to miss the next round on Thursday 7 January giving his rivals a chance to gain points on the young-gun.
