By Gracie Elvin (Twitter @gracieelvin) Wow this year has gone fast already! Since my last blog post in January, a lot has happened. My team and I had a great training camp in Adelaide with the GreenEdge-AIS ladies, including their international team mates Judith Arndt, Loes Gunnewijk and Claudia Hausler. We did some massive days of riding through the hills and had three Santos Series races thrown in for good measure during the Tour Down Under week. It was really good to spend time with the more experienced riders as well as some quality time with the Jayco-AIS team. I even managed to get 2nd to Arndt in one of the races, it was my first podium for the year and a good feeling that?s for sure! A few weeks back home was just what I needed before knuckling down again for a solid week of training with the girls in Melbourne to prepare for the New Zealand Cycle Classic. It was our first tour as a team and though we didn?t get any podiums until the end with Taryn Heather claiming 3rd overall, we were all happy with our efforts of racing hard and aggressive and as a cohesive unit. It was definitely good practice for the upcoming European season.

Another couple of weeks at home with lots of ?cram? sprint and ITT training including some serious sessions on the Wattbikes at the AIS, I was ready to head back over to NZ with GreenEdge-AIS rider Shara Gillow to compete at the Oceania Road Championships in beautiful Queenstown. She dominated the field in the ITT and I managed to claim a silver medal, which was a little bonus! We then worked together the next day to get me across the line first taking the road title. It was my first win of the season and my first big road win all together! I was so excited I barely slept that night, but I blamed it on the caffeine gels?

And of course with my favourite fluffy friends Lucky and Bella! I was off and away at the end of March. We landed in Amsterdam to jump straight into our first race and possibly the hardest race of our eleven-week trip, the Energiewacht Tour in Holland. It was a five-day, six stage tour with some of the best professional riders competing. I even had the experience of having to chase multiple World Champion Marriane Vos in the ITT! The whole week was really hard but quality racing and I gained so much in so few days.

We spent a week there with more hard training (4 hours on the Wattbike anyone??!) and then made the long trip back up to Belgium to our second home in Vroenhoeven just outside of Maastricht. The next day we raced a Lotto Cup in Buzingen and I had a good day with over 50km in a breakaway. Unfortunately our group was caught by the main bunch near the end, but at least I knew I could be competitive with these girls!

We?ve spent this week here in Belgium enjoying some (relatively) rain free weather and a couple of big training days, and will be racing this weekend at Omloop van Borselle on Saturday and GP Stadt Roselare on Sunday. I can?t wait to get into it again, I?m feeling better and more confident by the day! For more on Gracie’s racing, visit gracieelvin.com
