After finishing in fourth position for the previous two rounds, Jenny Macpherson (Port Adelaide Cycling Club) has claimed her first victory of the 2015/16 Focus Women’s Series season.
Macpherson demonstrated her sprinting abilities to the peloton by powering home, celebrating as she crossed the line.
Round 6 of the Focus Women’s Series was certainly an eventful race. Kim Pederson (USG Racing Team) launched an early solo attack which saw her lead the proceedings throughout the start of the race. Once Pederson was pulled back into the peloton, further attacks followed. Team SASI ensured the series leader, Dani McKinnirey, was well looked after.
The race came to a conclusion with a fierce bunch sprint. Jenny Macpherson (Port Adelaide Cycling Club) and Michelle Apostolou (USG Racing Team) lead the charge to the finish line, but it was Macpherson who proved to be too strong for the bunch claiming her maiden Focus Women’s Series victory of the season.
“I had a feeling it was going to be tough to form a break-away in the windy conditions, so I conserved as much as I could during the race in order to keep fresh for the sprint. My PACC teammates were great at covering potential breakaways and were strong throughout the race,” Macpherson said.
“SASI rider Maeve Moroney made a big move with two laps to go and forced a high pace, causing a small split of riders off the front.
“Dani McKinnery took over the pace setting with a lap to go and was super strong to back up after winning the National Omnium and Madison titles in the days prior.
“I jostled for position on Dani’s wheel with Maeve, but in keeping to the left of Dani around the final corner, was protected by the cross-wind and surged forward for a clean sprint win.
“After just missing out on the podium in the last two races, I’m really happy to take the win for round 6 of the series.”
Dani McKinnirey keeps her overall general classification lead heading into Round 7 on Thursday 7 January 2016 at Victoria Park.
