By Nathan Elliott (Twitter @n_sumo23) I headed up to Oxley on Saturday for the Sam Miranda “Strade Nero” road race. After reading plenty about the course which included a 6km dirt section with a climb, I was looking forward to something different for a change. The first few kilometers were raced pretty aggressively and after many attacks, a group of about ten riders got away. This move looked promising and I soon bridged up to it with Darren Lapthorne( Drapac). With all major teams represented this became the move of the day and only a couple of other riders were able to make it across. Once we hit the dirt section the race started to heat up and I tried my luck a couple of times up the climb along with a few other riders. At this point I was just hoping not to puncture and make it over the climb with the leaders. The dirt section was pretty fun and added a nice “euro” feel to the race. Over the top of the climb, with about 40km to go,there were only six riders left; Lapthorne, Pollock, Norris( all Drapac), Spencer( Budget), Clark( John West) and myself. We worked well together to maintain our advantage but 10km from home the attacks started. With Drapac having half the riders in the break it was always going to be difficult coming into the finish. Pollock attacked and I tried to bridge across but was shut down by Norris. Lapthorne then countered with Spencer on his wheel and joined Pollock at the front of the race. That left myself, Clark and Norris about 30 seconds back for the last few kilometers. Pollock managed to grab the win after a good lead out by Lapthorne, with Spencer holding onto second. I came home 4th, beating Norris and Clark in the sprint. For the last 40km I could feel I was getting a flat but it was going down pretty slowly so I thought I would be right. It became quite spongy though in the last few kilometers and I only had about 40psi left at the finish! I’d just like to say thank you to Sam Miranda for putting on and organizing such an excellent race. The race was run exceptionally well with post race festivities held at the winery, giving the riders a chance to mingle and grab a free meal. This race will only get bigger next year and I encourage everyone to come along!
