By?Nathan Elliott???@n_sumo23 As I didn’t have internet all the time I’ll give you a quick rundown of Thursday’s stage at the Tour of Southland. Long story short I got in a seven man break and we were away for about 140km. In the break also was a familiar face and fellow blogger Sam Horgan which was nice! It was a pretty hard day as we had head/cross wind the whole way and a lot of false flat. Being highest on GC, I wa virtual leader on the road for a while but it never looked like the bunch would give us too much time. About 20km to go two guys slipped off the front leaving myself, Sam, Kieran Hambrook and the Swiss u23 TT champion. The Swiss guy was clearly the strongest and couldn’t understand why we wouldn’t roll through but the simple fact was we were all cooked! We eventually got a chase going but couldn’t catch the front two. I rolled in for 6th with the peloton not far behind. It was a bit frustrating as the winner and guy that came 3rd weren’t exactly pulling through all day, but that’s bike racing! Stage 5 was the longest of the tour, 190km finishing up the brutal climb of coronet peak. The start was pretty fast with a lot of guys keen to get in an early move. The break eventually slipped away and the peloton was controlled by Oram’s team Kiwi Velo. The pace was pretty got with it being single file most of the day. Oh yeah, yet again the weather was beautiful and 28 degrees in Queenstown. We rode a fair bit of the stage along the lake and snow capped mountains next to Queenstown. It was easily the most scenic and spectacular bike race I have ever done. Once we came near the base of the climb, we caught the break and the pace was on. The climb was about 8-9km with an average of 9% and some 15-20% ramps. With three days of over 160km in the legs, the bunch exploded at the bottom. I was pretty cooked and coupled with the heat, it made for an epic day. The climb was a bit too steep for me so I tried to ride my own pace up it and caught a few people towards the top. Huge thanks to all the boys for lending a hand, they all ride awesome whether it was riding the front, getting bottles or keeping me out of the wind. Big thanks to Polygon Australia for having me, Chris Rigg, Ron Grenda, Dave?Walker, James Steinhauser for some wheels, Geoff fromgreatbuysuppliments.com, PreMax and Biken’Bean
