Reigning Subaru National Road Series (NRS) champion Ruth Corset will headline the defending champion Pensar SPM Racing Team when the 2013 Subaru National Road Series gets underway for women this weekend with the Mersey Valley Tour. It will be Corset?s first attempt at the Tasmanian Tour, with the Queenslander joining her team as a ‘guest rider’ at the second event of the 2012 Series. The 2010 National road champion went on to wrap up the individual crown in style with two Tour wins and two top five finishes in the remaining five events, also aiding Pensar SPM Racing to claim a convincing team victory. ?I have been training pretty hard for this first tour and I?m not doing any running or swimming this year,? revealed Corset, 35. ?I?m just focussing on my cycling and I?m feeling really strong.? The Tour, which features three stages across three days for elite women and under 19 men and women, gets underway on Friday April 26 with a picturesque time trial along the Bass Strait coastline near Ulverstone, before moving to the hills of Sheffield and Gunns Plains on the weekend. ?I?m pretty excited and really looking forward to being right up there for the hill top finish,? said Corset referring to stage two?s tough finish. ?But we have a few cards to play and we have a few girls that could get up there.? The Queensland based team will also feature fellow climber in Katrin Garfoot, who outsprinted Corset in a bunch finish to win the road race at the Oceania Road Cycling Championships in Canberra in November. Zoe Watters, Jenelle Crooks and Nicole Moerig complete the strong outfit. ?We have some pretty strong climbers in the team and are all riding pretty well at the moment, so that is good for us as the first two NRS tours are pretty hilly,? said Corset. ?I think it will be a good start to the year, but we haven?t really talked about it (defending the title), but obviously that would be great.? Pensar SPM Racing is expected to face tough opposition from the Tasmanian based Team Polygon outfit which features London Olympian Amy Cure and 2011 NRS champion Grace Sulzberger, while 2012 Mersey Valley Tour champion Lisa Jacobs will line up alongside Chloe McConville and Taryn Heather in a solid Jayco-Apollo VIS team. The 2013 Mersey Valley Tour will be held from April 26-28 and will feature on SBS 1 on Sunday May 5 (repeated Monday May 6). The 2013 Subaru NRS will see a total of 17 individual events to be held across the nation, including six combined men?s and women?s events and a total of 77 days of racing.
