Reporter: Tara C (Twitter @_Cyclegirl_) & Editor: Tara G (@aka_Jackie) Lauren Reynolds is an Australian BMX rider who will be joining?five Australian riders at the 2012 London Olympics. At the time of the announcement,?Reynolds, who was ranked No.5 in the World, edged out teammate and World No.6 Melinda McLeod by just three points. Her palmar?s include World Junior BMX Champion, Silver 2010 Supercross World Cup (Round 4) and Top 10 rankings in 2009 and 2010. Reynolds is an emerging star on the BMX scene and at only 21 years old we may be seeing her reaching the top of podium sooner than expected, with the Gold medal at the London Olympics not out of reach.? Congratulations on being selected to represent Australia at the London Olympics. When did you receive the news and what was your reaction? ? I had just landed on a flight from the Gold Coast to Sydney, on my way to USA when I read the official email from the AOC saying I was officially selected in the team! I was with my teammate, Caroline Buchanan who was also selected and my coach Wade Boots so it really was a special moment. The crew on the plane also made an announcement about the selection and my birthday which was super cool! I couldn’t take the smile off my face! It was ‘a dream come true’ on an already special day, my 21st birthday! I was stoked! Having been selected on the Olympic team at such a young age, we would hope to see you represent Australia in future Olympic games. What do you hope to gain from your first Olympic experience?? Yes hope so! I cannot wait for this experience and already the support has been incredible. I just want to go over there in the best possible shape I can be in, be as happy as I can be and give myself the best possible chance. If I can walk away from London knowing I have done absolutely everything possible and gave it my all I?ll be stoked. I do believe if I do this I have a high chance of getting a medal, ideally the gold one! I?d like to meet other amazing athletes, watch and learn from others and enjoy the journey. It may be one of many or it may be the only one so I?ll be going into London knowing I?ve done everything I can. You rode the Olympic test course last year, do you believe the course suits you and if so, why? Yes absolutely! I love the track, and I got my best results to date at that event. So I’m definitely feeling good about things and am going into the Games confident. The track is fast and big jumps; not too wide open but big enough. There is a tunnel which is very new for the sport, a little spooky I will say, but super cool and fast, love it! I just feel really comfortable and feel like I can just ride my bike my style and it works for me. Can?t wait! Where did your passion for BMX riding come from? Is there someone who inspired you to become a Pro BMX rider?? No one inspired me to be a BMX pro, but I was definitely strongly influenced by my older brother Bryce. He is 2 years older than me and ever since we could ride bikes we were on our BMX’s digging our own dirt jumps with our local street friends and jumping off ramps into the river we live on. I was a little tom boy and followed him everywhere! He was always egging me on to try new and bigger challenges. Of course I had ZERO fear and did everything he said otherwise he wouldn?t let me hang out with him ha-ha! Best thing I did, I have always been known for my bike skills and no fear. Just that makes me love everything about my sport. It’s crazy, but what more could I ask for? You currently live in Perth, Western Australia. What?s it like living there and how would you describe the BMX scene?? I am actually from Bunbury, Western Australia, a couple of hours south of Perth? – I? love my local; No place like home. You quickly realize this when you start living out of a suitcase, all over the world. I am currently however living on the Gold Coast in Queensland where the AIS BMX programme is based – Magic life style and perfect for my training needs. I really like it there! As for Perth, the BMX scene is ticking along nicely I think. Great to see the depth of young kids, girls and guys around and I think BMX WA are really stepping up to be able to support their riders and provide them with opportunities to allow them, one day, to get to do what I?ve been lucky to have.?
The lifestyle of a pro BMX rider definitely involves travel.? Do you enjoy this aspect of racing and have there been any countries you’ve been most excited about visiting?? Sure is! Life out of the suitcase is certainly an experience; Gets old fast though, ha-ha! Nothing like home, but I cannot complain. I have been given so many amazing opportunities. Most of the world events are often at the same place each year, which is kind of cool because we are somewhat familiar with the area. I was definitely super excited when I went to London for the first time last year for the Olympic test event, mainly because we got to see the venue and the village and the track was wicked. I?ve loved little things about each country, but I just think USA is the best! It?s so cheap, convenient, yummy food (maybe not always good for you), and everything is BIG! Shopping it so good!?
What has been your proudest moment on the bike? I think my 2 podium finishes at the 2011 Olympic test event was pretty special as that was what got me into the Olympic shadow squad and up for selection for the Olympic Games. It had been a tough beginning of the year and was able to really put things together well when it counted.? What does your pre-race preparation involve? Do you have any superstitions or rituals?? Nope! Plain and simple. Focus on the job required and do everything right to get it done. Always wear my PINK shoes at major events. You will see them at the Games? You must have had an intense training regime leading up to being selected. Will the training be any different leading up to the Olympics?? No nothing new or different. Just focusing on the essential areas required for this track and my own needs, it?s now just important to monitor myself to make sure the required rest is being taken, and I am happy and in a good space and frame of mind. If I?m feeling fast and confident,? I will race like I need to the Hard work has been done, now just keeping fresh and sharp is key at this point. What brand and model bike/frame do you currently ride and how many bikes do you have? I ride an Intense ?Podium? Bike. They are my bike sponsor, great bike and it rides perfect. I have too many bikes! A bunch of BMX bikes, training and old ones, MTB, Road bike, Beach Cruiser and my favourite of all time my Pink 50 Moto bike. Any words of advice for any young females out there that dreams of becoming a Professional BMX rider?? Do it!! You will never look back trust me! The sports growing so fast, so many more opportunities you don?t often get these kind of chances to compete at the Olympic Games or travel the world competing. It’s a once in a life time thing, make the most of it and more importantly, smile and have fun. Yewww! Do you have any other future goals you wish to achieve outside of BMX?? Live happy and make the most of everything in life. Of course with a beautiful family but not thinking about that just yet! Describe an average day in the life of Lauren Reynolds? Wake up, breakfast with some motivating music, training, eat, rest, eat, back to training, eat, sleep. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Just finished up at the Rio Olympics, looking at a bunch of opportunities and pathways to choose from and have some exciting decisions to make..:) Could be absolutely anything?..? 🙂 In 3 words describe your season so far? One big roller coaster. pelotoncafe wishes Lauren Reynolds all the best at the London Olympics, the pelotoncafe team will be watching and cheering for you. ?
