Eighteen of Australia’s most promising female cyclists took up the challenge of the Military Special Forces inspired cycling selection camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.
Out of those eighteen athletes, four were hand-picked by a team of selectors as having the qualities and attributes required to be a professional female cyclist and race in the High5 Australian National Women’s Road Development Team in the international peloton in 2015.
For the first time since it’s inception in 2011, a documentary of the camp has been commissioned through funding from High5 Nutrition & RMG Sport Management. This documentary will provide an exclusive insight in to a program that has quickly become renowned as one of the toughest selection camps in Australian sport.
The documentary follows the journey of the riders throughout the eight-day camp and you will witness the physical and emotional challenges the athletes are consistently faced with, day in and day out, on their quest to prove they have what it takes to make it as a professional cyclist.
One of Australia’s most accomplished road cyclists, Rochelle Gilmore, has been the driving force behind this project. After having experienced first hand what it takes to make it at the professional level, Gilmore has made it her mission to create a pathway for Australian women to be able to pursue a career as professional cyclists in Europe.
“As a former National Team member living in Europe, I can honestly say that these challenges the athletes faced at selection camp were extremely relevant to the real life challenges they will face in Europe. It was a wonderful experience to witness how well these athletes handled all types of pressures and conditions, both mentally and physically, within a very short period. We have some tough Aussies ready to take on the world in Europe,” explains Gilmore.
