Completely opposite previous stages in this year’s Vuelta a Espana, today’s 196 kilometer long ninth stage from Andorra to Barcelona was almost one long descent all the way to the finale where two short and steep climbs were challenging the peloton. However, four escapees were fighting in the front of the race to maintain their gap to the chasing bunch. But with 25 kilometers to go, the leftovers from the breakaway were reeled in and the Katusha-squad went to the front of the pack to control the pace towards the first of the two small climbs while the Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank riders were concentrated on protecting team leader, Alberto Contador. On the first climb, Alberto Contador launched an attack and then Alessandro Ballan (BMC), the leading rider, [W:Joaquin Rodriguez] (Katusha) and [W:Philippe Gilbert] (BMC) were on the move. And Rodriguez and Gilbert made it to the finish line where the Belgian was the fastest in teh sprint while the Spaniard took crucial bonus seconds on his nearest rivals in the GC. Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank’s [W:Alberto Contador] retained his overall third place and is now one minute behind the leading rider, Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha): ?Our primary goal was to make sure Alberto arrived safely in Barcelona and hopefully side by side with the other GC contenders and we’re happy with the outcome of the stage. Rodriguez took a few more seconds on us but we can live with that. Gilbert (Philippe) and Rodriguez are experts on these kind of uphill finishes. After tomorrow’s rest day we’re doing a rather flat stage where the wind might be the only factor and then the time trial is due and I think we can take some time from Rodriguez there. I’m not sure we can a minute but there are other opportunities on the long mountain stages that suit Alberto perfectly,? concludes Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank’s sports director, Bradley McGee. Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Banks Alberto Contador finished 22nd on today’s stage after having launched an early attack on the climb: ?The attack wasn’t really planned. The plan was to get through the stage without losing time. Actually, I was uncertain when the steep slope was coming but I have moved a bit to find a good position and then I saw that the second climb was the harder one. It was a pity to attack on the first climb and maybe I should have waited. However, this was a transition stage and now we have to enjoy the day off. We’ll be back the day after tomorrow.

Alberto Contador believes bonus seconds may play an important role in the race:

?Anything to add seconds is very important. Joaquin can lose time on the time trial to other specialists and bonuses could compensate for that. But it’s a very tough and demanding race and the Vuelta is yet to begin,? says Alberto Contador.
