For the GC favorites, the Vuelta a Espana’s 172.8 kilometer long 13th stage from Santiago del Compostela to Ferrol was an obvious opportunity to preserve themselves before taking on the next three stages that each mountainous terrain. However, today’s stage looked like a treat for the sprinters but seven escapees who created a gap early on the stage stole the attention. A few kilometers from the finish line, Stephen Cummings (BMC) leaped away from the breakaway group and took a beautiful stage win.

Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank made sure that [W:Alberto Contador] was brought safely to the finish line:

?Our main objective was to get through the stage safely which we did. Today’s was however a lot tougher than most people probably think. It was windy and constanstly the course changed direction so we had to use a lot of muscle to protect our climbers but Benji (Noval), Nicki (S?rensen) and Matteo (Tosatto) did an amazing job. The next few stages will be quite demanding for everyone and this is the time and place for the GC favorites to make the difference. We feel ready to fight. The terrain ahead of us looks like Alberto’s,? said Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank’s sports director, Bradley McGee.

There are no changes in the top of the GC where Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank’s leader is second:

?It was a day that punished the legs especially considering the stages that await us. But here comes my terrain and I hope the sensations will be good and that I’ll be able to grab the opportunity. I’m feeling well and I’m looking forward to tomorrow ?cause I’ve been preparing for this. The tactics will depend on how the legs feel but if Alejandro and Froome want to win they are forced to attack. With this terrain coming up it could be a critical situation to have bad day. And I hope it’s not me,? Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank’s Alberto Contador concluded before tomorrow’s first big mountain battle.
