It?s that time of year again; where WA?s talented junior cyclists will be putting all their training and hard work to the test, when they take on the clock in an attempt to be claim gold by achieving the fastest time in this year?s WA State Junior Individual Time Trial Championships on Saturday 4th August. This event featuring over 50 of WA?s junior cyclists will take place on the flat, fast and safe Champion Lakes circuit, hosted by Midland CC and its volunteers. In the U17 Boys category defending champion Sam Welsford (Woodlands, Northern Districts CC) will be looking to make it two in a row, and with the scintillating form he has shown this year where he has raced to the top of the Cycling WA Road Rider Series points tally on the back of placing first at the Peter Clark Classic, Peel Junior Tour and State Junior Road Championships, the odds are certainly with him. However, Matthew Jackson (Landsdale, Northern Districts CC) in his first year as U17s and last year?s U15 Champion, will be looking to spoil the party along with Glyn Fish (Falcon, Peel Districts CC) and LJ Sleegers (Cowaramup, South West CC). The latter two juniors placed first and second respectively in the junior ITT event held earlier in the year. Michael Storer of Midland CC (North Perth) is another one to look out for as he is generating some great form on the back of coming close runner up to Sam in the Junior Road Championships held in June. He also claimed silver in U15 category last year in this event. Shannon Sherwin (Padbury) and Alicia Buchanan (Quinns Rocks) from Northern Districts CC, will be the favorites to fight it out for the Gold medal in the U17 Girls, with Alicia hoping to get the better of Shannon for the first time in the last three attempts. This rivalry is reflected in the Cycling WA Road Rider Series point?s tally where both of them are coming 1st and 2nd respectively. It won?t be all one way traffic though as they are likely to come up against some stiff competition, from the likes of Molly Booker (Maylands, Midland CC), Zoe Clayton (Wembley, Midland CC) and Allison Wiggins (Milpara, Albany CC)who have all shown at different events that they have what it takes to challenge for the Gold medal. The U15 boys will see current Cycling WA Road Rider Series leader Connor Lambert of South West CC (Gelorup), looking to put in a strong performance and get one back on Craig Wiggins (Milpara, Albany CC) who trumped him in the State Junior Road Championships held in June. However, Craig will be full of confidence after taking home gold in the Road Championships and will want to repeat the feat in the ITT championships as well. Both placed first and second respectively at the ITT Junior event held earlier in the year. Jarrod Karel (Mindarie, Track Cycling WA) is also likely to put in a strong performance and challenge for the gold medal having claimed bronze on two other occasions. In the U15 Girls category, Niken Jefferies (Madeley, Northern Districts CC) current leader of the Cycling WA Road Rider Series points tally and 2011 runner up will be looking to consolidate her position at the top by claiming gold this time round. Niken is coming off some strong form, after claiming gold in the Peel Junior tour and State Junior Road Championships earlier in the year. ?However, her seemingly arch nemesis and defending champion Jemila Anderson (Kalamunda, Midland CC), will want to improve her runner?s up placings to Niken, in the last 2 events in 2012 by taking home the crown for the second year in a row and in doing so close the gap between the two on the Road Rider points tally. Jess Lawler of South West CC (Gelorup) and Sarah Tucknott (Perth MTB Club) will be keen break the stranglehold and also put themselves into strong contention to claim gold or a top three placing. This year the State Junior ITT Championships will take place at the Champion Lakes Regatta Centre on Saturday 4th August starting at 1pm, with WA?s junior talent being on display for all those interested in coming down and witnessing competitive racing at its best.
