Just one month after crashing heavily at the 2013 Bathurst Criteriums, Sam Burston of Cellarbrations Racing Team (CRT) has taken out the Under 23 division of the 2013 Ken Dinnerville Memorial Handicap, run by the Illawarra Cycling Club. Handicapped into the second last ?Block? group ? starting eight and half minutes behind the overall winner?s group (Brad Martin from the Illawarra Cycling Club) ? Burston scorched the testing 90km course to record the day?s 11th fastest time and finish just two minutes behind the winner. ?It was a smart race from Sam,? said CRT Team Director and fellow Elite Team rider Russell Menzies, who rode with Burston for much of the race. ?His tactics were perfect. The chasing group was closing fast on the leaders, but couldn?t quite bridge the handicap.? A time-honoured fixture on the NSW road racing circuit, the Ken Dinnerville Memorial is one of the oldest Handicap Races in Australia. First held in 1957 it is run annually in memory of cyclist Ken Dinnerville who was tragically killed in 1954 while out riding. Together with the bulk of the CRT squad, Burston?s next major targets will be the Keegan Downes Sundowner Handicap at Coonabarabran on June 22 and the Gunnedah to Tamworth road race on June 23, held immediately following the Santos North West Tour, part of the 2013 Subaru National Road Series.
