By Caelli Greenbank (Twitter @fireflycaelli) Belgium sure knows how to throw a party. But then, Belgium has truly taken cycling to its heart.? At the start of today’s [W:E3-Harelbeke] classic, fans of all ages from five right up to 75 are toting trikes and bikes along with them.? It’s hard to tell the pros from the amateurs, since everyone’s wearing their favourite team’s jersey.? Those who forgot theirs are checking out all the World Tour jerseys in the merchandise stall.? Even the kids haven’t been forgotten – all of the jerseys come in miniature, too. The hardcore fans are already down by the team buses across the river, waiting for their favourite riders.? The [W:Radioshack-Leopard] bus looks like a rock star has just arrived – and in a sense, one has.? [W:Stijn Devolder] is a local boy, from right here in Harelbeke, and the Belgians are mobbing the team bus like the biggest concert of the year.? Over by the Blanco bus, a French fan and his mates are waiting for signatures from [W:Mark Renshaw], the last of the [W:Blanco Pro Cycling] riders to head over to the starting line.? The Australian sprinter isn’t looking forward to the chilly Flanders wind after the icy temperatures at [W:Milan-San Remo] last weekend.? “I still haven’t recovered from [Milan-] San Remo so I don’t have any big expectations,” he explains as he pulls on his gloves.? “Today we’ll ride for [W:Sep van Marcke] and [W:Lars Boom].” As midday approaches, the many bratwurst and waffle vans are doing a roaring trade alongside the BMC merchandise truck.? The sign-in ceremony up on the main stage now over, the riders assemble under one of the many flammes that festively deck the town, and the fans flock to the barriers.? The countdown is in the local language of Flemish, but it’s hard to mistake the words either way – “Drie, twee, een, ga!”? A loud cheer goes up as the 199-strong peloton rolls off into the Flandrien countryside.? They’ll be back in five hours.
